The wood comes from Indonesia, and the story is that the Dutch colonialists would bury giant teak trees in volcanic soil to harden it for shipbuilding material. They meant to keep it buried for 15 years or so, but like squirrels burying nuts in the winter they forgot about some of it, and so much of it has been buried forgotten in Bali for hundreds of years! Enter Jason Lamberth. A great relationship with the Balinese allowed him to have a corner on the market of some seriously breathtaking (and HUGE!) hunks of wood. The feeling these pieces have are incredible.
